Insomnia, Anxiety, Allergies, Irritable Bowel -- Maybe it is High Histamine and Mast Cell Activation

Do you struggle with more than one of these?

  • insomnia and night waking

You may have high histamine and/or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome.  

For help with these symptoms, try the following:

Remove as much Gluten and Dairy from your diet as you can initially to help decrease reactivity and inflammation. 

Look at the high histamine food list below and try to eliminate the foods you can. It will take several months to eliminate the reactivity and the ongoing activation that has been occurring, so be patient.

Try these Medication and Supplemental Support Start with the first and add on as needed:

 

  1. Good quality multivitamin - Foundation MultiVitamin  (to get b's and molybdenum and copper, etc)
  2. B2 and B2 100mg
  3. Hist-Eze  (or Natural D-Hist from Ortho Molecular) 2 capsules two times daily for 1 weeks, then 2 capsules daily.
  4. Fexofenadine 180mg daily
  5. Famotidine 20mg- 2 tablets daily
  6. Vitamin C  500-2000mg/day
  7. Vitamin D3 5000IU per day
  8. Compounded ketotifen (will require a prescription from a Doctor)

 

Histamine and Foods

Many foods that contain histamine or cause the body to release histamine when ingested. When eaten, these foods may cause symptoms like a food allergy, irritable bowel, or may cause worsening of asthma and allergies.

Fermented foods may cause symptoms because they contain high histamine, yeast or mold.

Histamine-Rich Foods (including fermented foods):

  • Alcoholic beverages, especially beer and wine.
  • Anchovies
  • Avocados
  • Cheeses, especially aged or fermented cheese, such as parmesan, blue and Roquefort.
  • Cider and home-made root beer.
  • Dried fruits such as apricots, dates, prunes, figs and raisins (you may be able to eat these fruits - without reaction - if the fruit is thoroughly washed).
  • Eggplant
  • Fermented foods, such as pickled or smoked meats, sauerkraut, etc.
  • Mackerel
  • Mushrooms
  • Processed meats - sausage, hot dogs, salami, pepperoni, etc.
  • Sardines
  • Smoked fish - herring, sardines, etc.
  • Sour cream, sour milk, buttermilk, yogurt - especially if not fresh.
  • Soured breads, such as pumpernickel, coffee cakes and other foods made with large amounts of yeast.
  • Spinach, tomatoes
  • Vinegar or vinegar-containing foods, such as mayonnaise, salad dressing, ketchup, chili sauce, pickles, pickled beets, relishes, olives.
  • Yogurt

 

Histamine-Releasing Foods:

  • Alcohol
  • Bananas
  • Chocolate
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Milk
  • Papayas
  • Pineapple
  • Shellfish
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes
